Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science or equivalent from an
accredited university or college or equivalent related work experience.
Digital UNIX and Sun Solaris Certification; or willingness to attend
This position will serve as a key member of the Information Systems and
Technology department under the direction of the Director of
Information Systems and Technology. The successful candidate will
assist with the conversion to a new Fiscal and Student database
management system utilizing Informix and Digital UNIX. Duties will
include installation, customization, ongoing administration,
administration support, system tuning, and troubleshooting for systems
of various sizes, as well as second line support for internal technical
staff with other specialties.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
-Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science or equivalent from an
accredited university or college or equivalent related work experience
-Three years minimum professional experience as a UNIX systems
-Strong knowledge and background in UNIX systems administration
-Well versed in developing and establishing policies for UNIX systems
-Strong UNIX shell script writing experience
-Project management experience a plus
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
System Administration - including but not necessarily limited to
creation of user accounts, monitoring and administration of passwords,
rights, and user login profiles for client systems. Maintain servers
for standard Internet/Intranet services. Monitoring/scheduling system
backups, down-time, performance, usage, etc., and responding to client
requests for information or services related to same (file
archival/restoration, down-time statistics, system performance
monitoring, remote printer configuration, etc.). Maintain a stable
UNIX-server-based network for UNIX, Macintosh, and Windows clients.
OS Customization -scripting, storage management, job scheduling and
task automation for the creation of low-maintenance implementations
where appropriate. Automation of administrative maintenance tasks to
facilitate remote management and administration.
End-User Support and Education - providing coaching, training and
telephone and on-site support to end users, focusing on host-specific
or network-related problems. Demonstrating software or systems use to
end users. Encouraging and maintaining positive end-user behavior
vis-a-vis data integrity and security. Resolving hardware and software
conflicts; identifying operator error, bugs and applying appropriate
solutions. Channeling requests to other resources as necessary
Project Definition - receiving and clarifying support requests and
requests for assistance; breaking multiple requests into
clearly-defined projects which can be tracked and resolved individually.
Documentation - Tracking software and hardware problems through the
resolution cycle; tracking and documenting system changes, upgrades,
and trouble tickets; completing internal documentation as necessary to
maintain departmental accuracy and accountability. Adequately
documenting system configuration and operation to ensure system
integrity and continuity.
Hardware Installation - assisting in installation of hardware and
software, both for testing purposes and at client/user sites for system
expansion and/or enhancement.
Scheduling/Coordination - facilitating end user access to systems.
Scheduling installations, deliveries, demonstrations, training and
support sessions. Reliably adhering to schedules and appointments as
arranged by self and manager.
Research - assisting in software product research and evaluation;
product and supplies sourcing.
Training - teaching or assisting in the presentation of formal training
classes or small-group, hands-on instruction.
Internal Support - provide or assist in the provision of internal
support and system administration.
Other special projects as assigned by the Director of Information
Systems and Technology.

screen. Inflexible deadlines and interruptions; requires visual

minimal direct supervision.
