The next Seattle SAGE meeting is Thursday, February 9, 2006 at 7pm.

The meeting will be at the Electrical Engineering building on the University
of Washington Campus, aka EE1. Directions are linked to the EE Department's

Abstract:

Concepts related to information privacy and authenticity: strengths, 
weaknesses, motivations, and examples of encryption, digital 
identification, and trust hierarchies, with emphasis on how these concepts 
work together to give you a securely encrypted network stream.  Explained 
examples include x509 certificates, PGP, SSL, IPSec, and Public Key 
Infrastructures.  Brief overview of the tools available for manipulating 
keys, ciphertexts, certificates, and how to use them to become your own 
Certificate Authority.

Speaker Bio:

Robin Battey is the Head of IT at Coastal Environmental Systems in
Seattle, WA, a recent graduate of University of Washington's Computer
Engineering department, and does independent Networking and Security
consultation under the moniker of Zanfur Enterprises.  He has written a
number of open-source LDAP authentication modules for open source
applications including MediaWiki and RequestTracker, designed and
implemented network security for the NASA Shuttle Landing Facility's radio
tower weather monitoring equipment, and is responsible for fixing the 1TB
partition size limitation bug in the Linux 2.4 and 2.6 kernels.  Previous
presenting experience includes a series of lectures for the ACM on Linux
development and tools, and a guest appearance lecturing on the topic of
UNIX local and network security for the University of Washington's
Computing and Communications staff.

The Seattle SAGE Group (SSG) is a local group for systems & network
administrators in the Seattle and Pacific northwest areas (North
Western Washington). We are a local chapter of SAGE, but SAGE / USENIX
membership is not a requirement.  We sponsor a regular monthly meeting
open to the public on the second Thursday if each month at 7 p.m.
