We are on a quest to find our next system guru to join our elite server team. Since 2003, we have focused on providing personalized, professional and reliable hosting, dedicated servers, and high speed clusters for businesses of all sizes. Our tremendous growth (doubling in size in 8 weeks), particularly in our Ruby on Rails managed hosting segment has created a tremendous need for smart and creative system administrators to join our existing team. We’re looking for candidates whose sole mission is the success of our clients.

The Senior Systems Administrator (aka System Guru) performs a wide variety of tasks directly related to the administration and support of Linux systems in our high availability web-hosting environment. Additional, this position will help handle overflow tech support emails and phone calls relating to web hosting and dedicated server questions.

While we are looking for someone in the Seattle / Tacoma (Washington) corridor who can have a physical presence at our data center, we are open to review resumes for remote workers (San Francisco / Bay Area or Portland preferred).

The Senior Systems Administrator will be involved day to day with:

The administration of Solaris, Red Hat Enterprise, and Free BSD boxes.
Hardware support for Dell and Super Micro Servers running on AMD and Intel architectures.
Shell scripting for various system administration tasks including server monitoring.
Providing phone and email support to customers.
System performance optimization.
Our core business is in Ruby on Rails managed hosting, so we’re looking for someone with experience in the field. We’re in the process of launching some exciting new rails oriented products based on Solaris, and our candidate will hopefully share that enthusiasm and assist in the development of this product. Additionally, we are looking for a candidate who is currently or willing to be active in the rails community.

Our ideal candidate is a self-starter and self-learner, intelligent and able to adapt quickly to a rapidly changing and potentially demanding environment. Because of the wide variety of software and skills required, it is not expected that the candidate be familiar with all systems currently in use (see a semi-complete list at the bottom of this document). We will train our gurus on the specifics of our systems, but the candidate should come to the job with an understanding of the basics of computer networking, internet protocols including TCP/IP, HTTP, SMTP, POP3, and DNS. Furthermore, the candidate should possess the following traits:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to seek creative, viable solutions to problems.
Strong analytical and computer skills.
Ability to work independently.
The desired candidate will have or be in the process of obtaining a degree in a Computer Science or posses over 2 years of systems administration experience, although proven experience is valued over education. Prior experience in the data center industry is a plus, but not necessarily required. Experience with Ruby on Rails and Mongrel is required.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of the job, dexterity in using a telephone, computer keyboard and mouse, and calculator while seated at desk are required. The employee may, based on geographic location, be required to visit our data center located in Tacoma, WA. The employee must regularly lift up to sixty pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Besides our physical data center, work can be conducted from virtual offices. We have an office space in downtown Tacoma and the candidate may be expected to work certain shifts there. Hours are flexible and there is no required dress code for day to day activities. The candidate should be willing to be occasionally on call after hours and may have to work weekends.

While we are still small enough where we don’t have the same benefits packages as big competitors, we offer a unique work environment that is constantly changing and growing. We’re looking for some one who is more interested in getting in on the ground floor of something fast and fun. We want this job to be enjoyable for you, and as we continue to grow, we will reward your performance handsomely. In addition, you will also get to work day to day with equipment from companies you hear about on a regular basis.

Below is a list of different network technologies and vendors we work with regularly. Familiarity with most of these is a big plus.

Ruby on Rails, et la. (Subversion, Gems, Mongrel)
Barracuda Networks Load Balancers and Spam Firewalls
Cisco Products
Red Hat Linux ES 4
Communigate Pro Email Server
Scalix Server Email Server
BIND (With QuickDNS Gui)
LAMP Stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP)
Virtuozzo / OpenVZ

If you feel you can do this job we should talk. We think you are awesome and want to bring you onboard after the usual interview and pre-qualification stuff(we hope you will pass). This job does allow for telecommuting at least 3 months intially and possibly ongoing. Really a flexible laid back environment that cares about their technology employees. A great opportunity to see open source and *nix technologies at work and doing awesome stuff, great learning opportunities as well, ideal candidate can be right out of college. We are looking to fill this position quickly, so if you wish to apply send us a resume and we'll look it over and give you a call if you have sufficient level of qualifications for which we seek. If you are the right fit this likely to be a permanent opportunity.
